Mount Olive and Calypso anchor this portion of the coastal plain near the boundary of Wayne Co and Duplin Co. The landscape is defined by a dense network of watercourses, where the Northeast Cape Fear River is fed by various tributaries such as Brooks Swamp, Thunder Swamp, and Goshen Swamp. These wetlands dictate the patterns of local roads and settlement, with the higher ground occupied by the campus of Mt Olive Coll and the municipal infrastructure of the Mount Olive Municipal Airport.
