The Livingston Ranger District and Big Timber Ranger District meet in this landscape of high plateaus and ranching history. The terrain is divided by the Boulder Divide, which separates the drainages of Little Mission Creek and the West Boulder River. For genealogists and local historians, the map is remarkably dense with named residences and agricultural outposts, including the Swingley Ranch, Richards Ranch, and Burnt Leather Ranch.

Several former residential locations are preserved as sites, such as the Rogers Homestead (Site) and Fisher Homestead (Site). The southern portion of the map transitions into the high-altitude wilderness of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, where elevations rise toward Lion Mountain and Mount Rae. Educational history is noted at the Gordon School, while recreation and navigation are represented by the Footbridge over the river and the secluded Lost Lakes.
