Mount Rushmore Memorial and its namesake peaks dominate the south-central portion of this Pennington County landscape. Just to the east of the memorial, the small community of Harney and the Keystone Cem sit along the winding path of Battle Cr. The terrain is defined by a dense network of gulches and ridges, from Rockerville Gulch in the northeast to Lafferty Gulch and Buckeye Gulch near the center.

Water and recreation are central to the northern half of the sheet, anchored by Sheridan Lake and its surrounding facilities like North Cove Campground and South Beach Campground. Evidence of the area's multifaceted land use is visible in the presence of the Rushmore Airport, the Rushmore Shadows Resort, and the historic Burnt Ranch located near the northern border along N Cove. These features illustrate a transition from traditional ranching and mountain geography to a modern tourism-driven economy focused on the Black Hills landmarks.
