The Hueco Mountains anchor this arid landscape along the border of New Mexico and Texas, where the high desert terrain is defined by an essential network of water catchment systems. Named ranching and livestock features like Mountain Tank, Red House Tanks, and Fisher Tanks are scattered throughout the elevations, indicating the vital importance of water management in this Otero County region. The terrain is marked by significant topographical shifts, from the prominent Red Hill to the drainage of Castner Draw. Modern ranch and service roads such as Co Rd F001 provide the only significant access through the survey area, which straddles the boundary between Otero and Hudspeth counties. This 2017 data reflects the continued reliance on traditional water features like Big Cement Tank and Little Cement Tank to support land use in an otherwise unforgiving environment.
