About this map

High-altitude ranching and mining operations define this northeastern Nevada landscape as surveyed in the mid-1930s. The terrain is dominated by the Independence Mountains, including peaks like Mt Velma and Mt Ichabod, with much of the northern area protected within the Humboldt National Forest. Settlement patterns are characterized by isolated family outposts and ranching complexes such as the Guerricabeitia Ranch, J M Prunty Ranch, and the P Goicoechea Ranch. These remote holdings were connected by historic routes like the Penrod Trail. In the northeastern quadrant, the McKnights Placer Mine near Copper Creek points to the region's mineral extraction history. Education for the scattered homesteads was centralized at the Bryan Sch, located near the convergence of numerous small drainage systems that feed into the South Fork Owyhee River and the Bruneau River.
