Little Missouri River flows through this southwestern corner of North Dakota, carving a complex drainage network into the high plains of Bowman County. The landscape is defined by its distinct erosional features, most notably the namesake Mud Buttes and the Rattlesnake Buttes to the north. These landmarks provide a stark contrast to the surrounding drainage basins of Skull Creek, Horse Creek, and Sevenmile Creek, which create a deeply textured topography across the various township and range divisions.
