Santa Rosa Island and the neighboring shoreline of the Florida Panhandle are defined here by a complex landscape of military reservations and coastal recreation. Much of the northern terrain is occupied by the expansive Eglin Air Force Base, characterized by numerous ponds and wetlands such as Prairie Ponds and the East Bay Swamp. The East Bay River flows through these protected lands toward the coast, where residential developments like Wynnehaven Beach have established a foothold along the Santa Rosa Sound.
