New Freedom and Shrewsbury anchor the northern reaches of this borderlands survey, where the Pennsylvania Maryland state line bisects a landscape defined by deeply incised stream valleys. This area in York and Baltimore counties reveals a historic network of mills and small communities like Bentley Springs, Gores Mill, and Valley Mill situated along the winding courses of Beetree Run and the Little Falls. To the south, the terrain descends toward the Prettyboy Reservoir, with its prominent Frog Hollow Cove and the aptly named Spook Hill overlooking the water. Local heritage is preserved in several rural burial grounds, including the Rock Chapel Cem and Bowser Cem.
