The low-lying coastal plains of Hyde County are defined here by an extensive network of drainage canals and the southern shores of Lake Mattamuskeet. The landscape is a mix of agricultural tracts and conservation areas, including the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge. This environment necessitated the construction of numerous waterways like the Quarter Canal and the prominent Outfall Canal to manage the high water table typical of this North Carolina region.
