USGS Topo · Published 1971

About this map

The Tonto National Forest landscape shown here in the early 1960s is defined by a high-desert terrain of dramatic mesas and deep canyons, where water sources like Robbers Roost Spring and Cottonwood Spring dictated the locations of human activity. Mining interests are scattered across the southern and northern sectors, notably the Phoenix Mine and Maricopa Mine near the base of Continental Mountain, as well as the Grays Gulch Mine to the north.
