Newcomb is the primary settlement on this Shiprock Agency landscape, positioned where several historic transportation routes converge. The area is defined by an intricate network of desert watercourses, including the wide Captain Tom Wash and the northern Peña Blanca Arroyo. These seasonal drainages carved the terrain between the Tunicha Valley and the rising ground of Grey Mesa to the south. The reliance on water in this arid environment is evident in the presence of the Captain Tom Reservoir and smaller water sources like Sinks Spring. The map documents a transition from traditional routes to modern infrastructure, showing Indian Service Route 5001 and Indian Road 5022 as they cross the drainage basins of the Tse-nas-chii Wash and To-nil-choni Wash.
