Noble Butte and the surrounding Mendocino peaks rise above a complex network of waterways that define this landscape. The South Fork Eel River winds through the southwestern corner near the settlement of Riverdale, fed by numerous drainages including McCoy Cr and Rock Cr. This area is characterized by high-elevation clearings and meadows, such as Hittabidels Opening and Peterson Opening, which likely served as early navigational or grazing landmarks in the heavy timber.
