Leiterville stands as a primary named settlement in this high-altitude landscape within the Tobacco Root Mountains, where the headwaters of the S Boulder River and S Willow Cr originate. The area is defined by the complex boundary between Deerlodge National Forest and Beaverhead National Forest, reflecting a legacy of federal land management in Madison County. Glacial activity has left a dense concentration of alpine water bodies, including the Brannan Lakes group, Globe Lake, and Sailor Lake below the crests of Hollowtop Mtn and Mt Jefferson. Water management for lower-elevation use is evident in the presence of the Bismarck Reservoir, Ziegler Reservoir, and Thompson Reservoir. This 2014 survey documents a terrain of high peaks like Noble Peak and Granite Peak alongside important crossing points such as Mustard Pass and Tom Graham Pass.
