Nolan sits at the southwestern edge of this landscape where the high plateau of The Divide meets the broken drainages of the Texas Rolling Plains. The topography is defined by significant elevation changes, from the prominent Birdsnest Bluff and Indian Hand Bluff in the west to the deep cut of Coffee Hollow near the center. The drainage pattern is complex, with Weaver Springs Cr and Mulberry Cr carving through the northern canyons while Elm Cr flows toward the eastern border. This 2016 survey illustrates a sparsely populated ranching and agricultural region along the Nolan and Taylor county line, where local history is preserved at Slater Chapel Cem and Dora Cem. The road network, including FM 126 and numerous county routes like Co Rd 258, follows the natural contours of the ridges and valley floors.
