About this map

The Old Red Lake Indian Reservation Boundary cuts diagonally through this 1919 military survey, reflecting a landscape in the midst of massive drainage and reclamation efforts. Thousands of acres in the townships of Washkish, Konig, and Rland are defined by an extensive grid of man-made waterways, including Main Jud. Ditch No.8 and Jud. Ditch No.23, designed to siphon water from the timbered wetlands. The settlement of Norden sits at the junction of these drainage lines, while the Tamarac River and Sturgeon Riv. provide the natural drainage for the northern reaches. This map, compiled by the Corps of Engineers, captures Northern Minnesota at a time when the county line between Beltrami Co. and Koochiching Co. marked a frontier of engineering against the native marshland.
