Northwest Peak and the high ridges of the Purcell Mountains anchor this high-elevation terrain along the border of the Kaniksu National Forest and Kootenai National Forest. The landscape is defined by its dramatic drainage basins and alpine water bodies, including Upper Hawkins Lake, Burke Lake, and the remote Lake Florence. Navigation through these peaks is facilitated by a network of seasonal routes and recreation paths, most notably the Pacific NW National Scenic Trail which winds through the central and southern sections of the quadrangle.
