The Kootenai National Forest dominates this northern Montana landscape, where the Yaak River and its West Fork Yaak River converge just south of the international border. Mapped in the early 1960s, the terrain is characterized by high peaks such as Mushroom Mtn, Mt Obermayer, and Garver Mtn, the latter of which features the Garver Lookout Tower for fire observation.

Civilian activity is concentrated along the river valleys and timbered slopes, evidenced by the Pete Creek Camp and a system of rugged transportation routes including a Pack Trail and various unpaved roads. The presence of a Gravel Pit suggests local maintenance for these forest routes. The drainage patterns of Pete Meadows Creek and Screw Creek define the ridges of this remote corner of Lincoln County, situated directly against the boundary between Canada and the United States.
