About this map

The Fortymile Desert floor dominates this part of Churchill County, where the stark topography of the Trinity Range and the West Humboldt Range frame a complex terminal drainage system. At the center of this basin, the Humboldt Sink and Humboldt Lake collect what remains of the river's flow, managed by features like the Humboldt Dike and the Lower Humboldt Drain. This 2015 survey shows how the modern transportation corridor, including Interstate 80 and Us 95, follows the traditional paths established by early desert travelers. Along these routes, smaller named points such as Ocala, Miriam, Trinity, and Cressid represent the scattered human presence in a landscape defined by alkali flats and high desert peaks. Rising above the basin floor, Topog Peak serves as a prominent landmark in the southern reaches of the West Humboldt Range.
