The Waccamaw River winds through a vast network of wetlands and islands in this coastal plain landscape near the border of Columbus County and Brunswick County. Small communities like Old Dock and Riverview are established on the higher ground between expansive areas such as the Green Swamp, White Marsh, and Boggy Swamp. The terrain is characterized by a series of named "islands" that are actually areas of slightly elevated land within the swampy environment, including Snake Island, Clifton Island, and Sweetgum Island.
