The Oglala National Grassland dominates this high plains landscape along the county line between Sioux and Dawes. The terrain is defined by distinct geologic formations and an intricate system of drainages, most notably the winding course of Long Br Cr. Human modification of the arid environment is evident through a series of water management features, including Meng Reservoir, Agate Dam Reservoir, and Board Gate Dam Reservoir. These small impoundments, alongside Moody Reservoir, illustrate the necessity of water storage for ranching and conservation in this corner of Nebraska. Prominent local landmarks such as Waldon Hills, Twin Butte, and Sugar Loaf Butte provide vertical relief against the expansive shortgrass prairie. Transportation through the area is facilitated by State Hwy 2 and local routes like Toadstool Rd and Orella Rd.
