1955 Map of Orland

About this map

Alamoosook Lake and the surrounding coastal hills of Hancock County are defined here by a network of small inland water bodies and established 19th-century settlements. This 1955 revision documents a landscape of numerous named high points such as Flying Moose Mtn and Flag Hill, positioned between the growing centers of Orland and East Holden. Local history is deeply etched into the terrain through a high density of small burial grounds, including Back Ridge Cem and Oak Grove Cem. Industry and infrastructure are represented by the Annear Copper Mine in the south and the US Fish Hatchery near East Orland. The presence of the Maine Central rail line and the Acadia Highway shows the mid-century transportation routes connecting the smaller crossroads of Winkumpaugh Corners and Five Mile Corners to the larger region.
