Racetrack occupies the western edge of this Montana landscape, where the valley floor meets the rising slopes of the Deerlodge National Forest. The hydrology of the region is defined by the Clark Fork, which is supported by a complex network of tributaries and irrigation features like the Valiton Ditch. This 2017 survey shows the transition from the relatively flat agricultural lands of the river valley to the higher elevations of O'Donnell Mtn. Movement across the terrain is dictated by drainages such as Orofino Cr, Peterson Cr, and Burnt Hollow Cr, which have historically shaped the routes of rural roads like Boulder Rd and Burnt Hollow Rd. The map provides a clear picture of land management and water usage at the border of Powell and Deer Lodge counties.
