Furman University occupies a central position in this upstate South Carolina landscape, situated between the growing residential corridors of Travelers Rest and the northern outskirts of Greenville. The terrain is dominated by the prominent rise of Paris Mountain, much of which is preserved within Paris Mtn State Park. This area serves as a significant drainage divide, with the Enoree River flowing to the northeast and the Reedy River winding through the center, feeding into Furman Lake and eventually toward Saluda Lake in the southwest. A high density of local history is recorded through numerous burial grounds, such as the John Cooper Family Cem and the Travelers Rest United Methodist Church Graveyard, which anchor the long-established communities of Renfrew, Montague, and Berea. Industrial influences remain visible at the Cone Mill Pond in the Sans Souci neighborhood, reflecting the region's textile heritage.
