Lewis & Clark National Forest encompasses much of this landscape, where the southern reaches of the Little Snowy Mountains meet the Big Snowy Mountains. The topography is defined by a series of deep drainages and ridges, most notably Patterson Canyon, which runs through the center of the sheet. To the north, Horsethief Canyon and Hay Coulee break the terrain near the headwaters of the S Fork Flatwillow Cr.
