The East Verde River carves a central path through this landscape, flanked by a series of recreation sites including First Crossing Campground and Second Crossing Campground. This corridor serves as the spine for several small residential clusters such as Whispering Pines, Freedom Acres, and Wonder Valley. To the south, the terrain levels into mesas where the Payson Airport and the community of Birch Mesa are established near the edge of the Gila County line.
