Mine Hills dominate the western portion of this Perry County landscape, where deep drainages like Pecaut Hollow and Barbier Hollow carve through the terrain toward the South Fork Saline Creek. The 1980 survey shows the western edge of Perryville as a growing hub, anchored by the expansive grounds of the St Marys Seminary and multiple historic burial grounds including Mt Hope Cemetery and St Marys Cemetery.

Water management and conservation are evident in the development of the County Lake State Wildlife Management Area and numerous small impoundments such as Seminary Lake and the Perca Lakes. To the south, rural life centers on the small settlements of Highland and Friendly Valley, while the southern border is defined by the winding course of Apple Creek.
