Peterson Lake and the surrounding prairie of McLean County are defined by an expansive chain of glacial potholes and permanent water bodies. The landscape is dominated by large basins including Lake Williams, Pelican Lake, and Lake Holmes, which together form a complex hydrologic network. These waters are surrounded by a rigid grid of rural roads like 14th St NW and 14th Ave NW, reflecting the systematic section-line development typical of North Dakota. Cultural markers are concentrated at rural crossroads, notably the Medicine Hill Cem in the northeast and Saint Pauls Cem near the southern boundary. This 2014 survey documents a region where agricultural land use and natural wetlands exist in close proximity, with smaller bodies like Cottonwood Lake and Nelson Lake punctuating the northern reaches of the quadrangle.
