Lincoln National Forest land dominates the eastern edge of this landscape, where the high terrain of The Rim overlooks a complex system of drainage and ranching infrastructure. The arid geography is defined by the winding course of Piñon Creek, which is fed by various topographical depressions such as Little Collins Draw and Collins Draw. These watercourses carve through the Collins Hills, creating a network of canyons including Horse Canyon and Lewis Canyon.
