Placita sits along the Crystal River at the southern edge of this high-altitude survey, where the river valley is hemmed in by the slopes of the White River National Forest and Gunnison National Forest. The landscape is defined by the steep transition from the river bottom up toward McClure Pass and the high ridges of Huntsman Mountain. Throughout the area, a network of historic drainage ways and basins is clearly delineated, including the significant Coal Basin and the winding course of South Thompson Creek.
