About this map

The Hawaiian Ocean View development dominates this portion of the Island of Hawai'i, showcasing a sprawling grid of residential streets laid over prehistoric and historic volcanic terrain. The landscape is defined by its recent geological history, notably the massive Lava Flow of 1907 and the Lava Flow of 1887, which dictate the path of the modern Highway 11. Along the southern shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, small pockets of respite appear at Pōhue Bay and Pōhue Beach, adjacent to the Kanonone Waterhole. These coastal features, along with several named kipukas—islands of older land and vegetation surrounded by newer flows—such as Kipukapueo and Kipukakanohina, reveal the complex relationship between human habitation and the active volcanic activity of the Kaʻū District.
