About this map

The Amatusuk Hills dominate the central topography of this Arctic landscape, forming a prominent upland divide between major drainage systems. In this mid-century environment, the Kukpowruk River meanders sharply through the eastern and southern portions of the sheet, its tight oxbows and loops indicating a complex alluvial process across the North Slope. To the south, the Beaufort Basin marks a significant depression in the terrain, while the northern reaches are defined by the headwaters of Kukchiak Creek and Deadfall Creek. This survey reflects the remote character of the region as documented in the 1950s, showing a land untouched by roads or permanent settlements and defined entirely by its hydrography and elevation.
