The San Rafael Desert dominates this arid landscape, where the shifting sands and weathered sandstone of the S-w-e-e-t-w-a-t-e-r R-e-e-f define the northern boundary. The terrain is deeply incised by a series of drainages, most notably the White Roost Canyon and the North Fork Robbers Roost Canyon in the southern reaches, areas historically associated with the hideouts of the Old West.
