Joshua Tree National Park encompasses the majority of this desert terrain, where the topography is defined by the convergence of several major landforms. The Hexie Mountains dominate the northwestern sector, while the Eagle Mountains and Cottonwood Mountains rise to the south and east. Between these ranges lies the expansive Pinto Basin, a low-lying area that collects drainage from seasonal watercourses.
