High ridges of the Ouachita Mountains dominate this western Arkansas landscape during the late nineteenth century. The prominent Poteau Mountain and Sugar Loaf Mountain anchor the northern reaches of the sheet, while the Washita or Ouachita River carves through the southern terrain near Dallas. Significant to local history and genealogy is the appearance of Cherry Hill (Egger P.O.), alongside established settlements like Waldron and Cauthron.

A network of gaps, including Eagle Gap and Foran Gap, provided essential passage through the formidable ranges of Rich Mountain and Black Fork Mountain. The boundary between Indian Territory Arkansas is clearly delineated along the western edge, marking the edge of white settlement before Oklahoma statehood. Evidence of nineteenth-century infrastructure is visible at the Toll Gate on Johnson Creek, while the presence of the Poteau River and Fourche La Fave River underscores the region's reliance on major watercourses for early development.
