The New River carves a dramatic path through this West Virginia landscape, creating sharp meanders around Stretcher Neck and the Stretcher Neck Tunnel. Within the boundaries of the New River Gorge National River, the waterway descends through Quinnimont Rapids and Grassy Shoals Rapids, separating the high plateau settlements of Grandview and Piney View from the river-level hamlets of Prince and Quinnimont.

Modern infrastructure spans the gorge via the Thomas Buford Pugh Memorial Bridge, while the heights of Redden Ridge and Backus Mtn overlook the deep valley. Evidence of the region’s topography and local family history is found in places like McCreery Hollow, the Plumley Cem near Plumley Mtn, and the Round Knob Lookout Tower. The southern portion of the map shows the more developed corridor near Beaver and the Raleigh County Memorial Airport.
