Purgatory Saddle and the surrounding high-elevation peaks of Adams County define this corner of the Idaho backcountry as it appeared in 2011. The landscape is characterized by a high density of alpine basins and named summits, including Smith Mountain and Pyramid Peak. Water is a central feature of the terrain, with numerous lakes such as Satan Lake, Crystal Lake, and Emerald Lake dotting the drainages of Granite Creek and Lake Fork.
