The Pohakuloa Training Area dominates this high-altitude landscape on the Island of Hawai'i, where military infrastructure meets a complex volcanic history. The terrain is defined by successive eruptive events, including the massive Ke'āmuku Lava Flow and the clearly delineated Lava Flow of 1843 and Lava Flow of 1935. These flows converge near the Humu'ula Saddle, a critical geographic pass between the island's great volcanic peaks.
