Lava Flow of 1950 and earlier eruptions define the volcanic landscape of this portion of the Island of Hawai‘i. The map documents a sequence of geothermal events spanning over a century, from the Lava Flow of 1887 to the Ho‘ōpūloa Lava Flow of 1926. These flows are punctuated by various kīpuka—islands of older land and vegetation spared by the encroaching molten rock—including Kipuka Pele o Iki, Kipuka Akala, and Kipuka Pahipa.
