Island of Hawai'i terrain dominates this survey of the high-altitude pass between massive volcanic peaks. The landscape is defined by successive volcanic events, clearly delineating the extent of the Lava Flow of 1843, the Lava Flow of 1855, and the Lava Flow of 1935. These flows create a chronological record of the island's geomorphology, cutting across the Humu'ula Saddle. Modern infrastructure follows these natural corridors, with Saddle Rd and Humuula Rd providing transit through the volcanic field.
