Quail Prairie Mountain stands as a central landmark in this portion of the Siskiyou National Forest, where the landscape is defined by the deep drainage of the Chetco River and its numerous tributaries. In the late 20th century, this area of Curry County remained largely undeveloped, dominated by the eastern reaches of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. This protected area is characterized by its complex network of ridges and basins, including Long Ridge, Moores Ridge, and the prominent Backbone Ridge.
