The Chetco River carves a deep path through the southern reaches of the Siskiyou National Forest on this mid-century survey of the Oregon-California borderlands. The landscape is defined by its series of high prairies—including Lookingglass Prairie, Horse Prairie, and Red Mountain Prairie—and the rugged ridgelines of the Siskiyou Mountains. Small pockets of human activity are clustered primarily near the riverbanks and coastal margins, such as the Upper Chetco Sch and the Tamba Ranch.
