Rainbow Lake dominates the central landscape of this wilderness area in Piscataquis County, surrounded by a complex network of glacial ponds and mountain peaks. The northern edge of the sheet is defined by the powerful West Branch Penobscot River, where a series of dramatic river features include Big Ambejackmockamus Falls, Little Niagara Falls, and the Nesowadnehunk Deadwater. This 1980s topography documents a region managed for both conservation and recreation, with a significant portion of the land falling within the southern boundary of Baxter State Park.
