The Chattooga River corridor serves as the natural boundary between Rabun County, Georgia, and Oconee County, South Carolina, in this 2014 survey. High-elevation terrain is the defining characteristic of the landscape, punctuated by summits such as Rainy Mtn, Screamer Mtn, and Boggs Mtn. The region is divided between the Chattahoochee National Forest to the west and the Sumter National Forest to the east, with much of the human activity concentrated along US Hwy 76.
