The San Juan River flows through the northeastern corner of this San Juan County landscape, bordering the settlement of Cudei. To the south, the terrain is defined by the high ground of the Gray Hills and a complex drainage system that includes Shiprock Wash, Lichii Wash, and Little Shiprock Wash. This topography illustrates the arid environment of the Shiprock Agency region, where seasonal watercourses like Malpais Arroyo carve through the basin.
