Rio Grande National Forest dominates this section of the San Juan Mountains, defined by high-altitude drainages and prominent peaks. The western edge of the map follows the winding course of the Conejos River, which is fed by numerous tributaries including Lake Fork and Saddle Cr. Central to the landscape is the namesake Red Mtn, flanked by the sprawling Willow Mountain complex. To the northeast, high-country hydrology is visible through Big Lake, Spencer Lake, and the headwaters of French Cr. The terrain is deeply incised by multiple gulches, such as California Gulch and Robinson Gulch, indicating a complex system of seasonal runoff. In the southeast, the open expanse of La Jara Meadows provides a distinct break from the timbered slopes, marking the transition toward La Jara Cr.
