About this map

The high-elevation backcountry of the Rio Grande National Forest dominates this landscape in southern Colorado, defined by a complex network of drainage basins and peaks. The Conejos River flows through the western portion of the map, while the terrain rises to notable summits including Red Mtn and Willow Mtn. These peaks are connected by a system of primitive routes such as the Willow Mountain Trl and Acascosa Trl, which provide access to secluded water bodies like Acascosa Lake and Rock Lake. The eastern section shows a transition into more open areas at La Jara Meadows and the larger basin of Big Lake. Dozens of named gulches, including California Gulch and Robinson Gulch, illustrate the intricate watershed patterns that feed into La Jara Cr and Jim Cr.
