The Rio Grande National Forest dominates this high-altitude landscape in the southern San Juan Mountains, where the drainage basin of the Conejos River carves deep into the terrain. Just after the millennium, the map documents a region defined by its water resources and seasonal grazing heritage, marked by the long Stock Driveway and a network of trails. Along the western edge, the South San Juan Wilderness offers a protected view of the wilderness as it appeared during the 1960s original survey, updated with 2001 Forest Service revisions.
