The confluence of the Umpqua River and Smith River defines this coastal landscape, where the settlements of Gardiner and Reedsport sit at the water's edge. This 2014 survey reveals a geography of complex tidal waterways including McIntosh Slough, Hudson Slough, and Otter Slough, interspersed with prominent landforms like Bolon Island and Steamboat Island. The upland areas to the south and east are characterized by the heavily dissected terrain of Scholfield Ridge and several named gulches, such as Turner Gulch and East Gulch. Local history is anchored at the Gardiner Cem north of the town center, while much of the surrounding timberland is managed as part of the Siuslaw National Forest. The map traces the critical transportation corridors of Us 101 and Or-38, which connect these riverfront communities to the interior and the Pacific coast.
