About this map

Kettle Creek and the Susquehanna River dominate this 1940s landscape, tracing deep valleys through the high plateaus of Clinton and Potter counties. The rail-and-river economy is centered on the railroad hub of Renovo, with the Pennsylvania railroad line following the riverbank through West Renovo, South Renovo, and on to the junction at Keating. Smaller upland settlements and camps are scattered throughout the drainage basins, including the isolated mountain community of Bitumen and the crossroads at Hammersley Fork. Local genealogy is well-preserved through numerous family and community burial sites like Laurel Hill Cem, McCoy Cem, and Summerson Cem. Distinctive landmarks of the era include the Tamarack Fire Tower overlooking the Tamarack Swamp and the Gospel Camp Ch located near the northern reaches of Kettle Creek.
