Coal Hill and the surrounding timber and mining country of the Cumberland Plateau are documented in this 2016 survey. The terrain is defined by deeply cut hollows and high ridges, including Brimstone Ridge and Schoolhouse Ridge, which hem in the drainage of Brimstone Creek and the New River. The map is particularly valuable for its density of family and community burial grounds, recording the locations of the Mill Creek Cem, Campground Cem, and Newport Cem among many others.
